Unlike other nations now or in the past, America allows Christians the opportunity and the right to protect their freedoms for religious expression. However, groups like the ACLU and People for the American Way are working hard to suppress Christians and to strip them of their rights. What can be done? Religious groups are divided on how to use government to protect those freedoms and some debate whether Christians should be involved in government at all. Confusion arises when the position of Christians in government is equated with Christians because of government. Government is not the method through which Christ seeks to spread the Gospel and to win souls. Christianity thrives in spite of government. Nonetheless, government favorable toward Christianity is a peaceable government (1Timothy 2:1-2) and conducive for public expression of Christ’s teachings. This increases the witness and exposure to the Gospel message. Wise saints recognize such opportunities and take advantage of proclaiming the Gospel. It is also wise to maintain these opportunities. How can Christians work toward keeping government favorable toward them? The great commission found in Matthew 28:19-21 is the answer. Because government is a reflection of the people who vote for their elected representatives, government is ultimately made “Christian” when the electorate is Christian in its values. Thus churches are the centers for social change as well as individual change. When churches do their job of discipling saints and winning souls to Christ, and the ministry of Christ multiplies, a democratic society like America cannot help but become Christian. |
